Maximize Your Potential at CMG2002

Storage Networking Featured Speakers (Mark Friedman, POC)

Fred Moore
President, Horison, Inc.
The Perfect Storm

Fred will illustrate the disruptive trends that are redefining the storage industry from his unique perspective as a leader in innovation for over twenty-five years. Storage Administrators and Capacity Planners are faced with a bewildering set of new storage technology that is emerging which has the potential to reshape the industry by lowering the cost of storage services, while at the same time boosting the performance of storage subsystems and improve their manageability. Face the future of networked storage with Fred as your guide.

Nick Tabellion
Chief Technology Officer, Fujitsu Softek
The Virtualization of Storage

Storage virtualization is about implementing a dynamic link between data that is logically presented to a host computer and the physical storage where the data resides. The demands of rationalizing storage management policies and procedures across heterogeneous platforms demands that this link be "virtualized" so that data can be managed on physical disk independent of the capabilities of the host platform. This is not a new idea; there are numerous precedents for storage virtualization in mainframe storage, including IBM's DFSMS volume pooling software and the StorageTek Iceberg's virtual disk hardware capability. In today's world of interconnected open systems that use just-in-time file allocation policies and fixed block I/O, storage virtualization technology has an added role to play. This session will explore the scope of storage virtualization technology for open systems and where it is headed in the near future.

The Holy Grail of Data Disaster Avoidance: The Quest for Storage Recovery Strategies in a Nasty and Brutish World

Aside from skilled personnel, data is an organization's most irreplaceable asset. However, data itself is a moving target from the standpoint of disaster recovery planning. This pair of one-hour sessions will familiarize attendees with the concepts, strategies and best practices in data disaster avoidance and recovery. Session 1 will establish the context, discussing the scope of disaster recovery planning and describe how evolving storage technology is challenging traditional DR planning. Session 2 focuses on the state of current storage technology, describing the reality most organization face with mixed topologies, heterogeneous platforms, and the quagmire of multiple protocols.

Storage Networking Technology Sessions

Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Technical Exchange
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) was incorporated in December 1997 is non-profit trade association dedicated to ensuring that storage networks become complete and trusted solutions. SNIA works towards this goal by forming and sponsoring technical work groups, by producing (with our strategic partner Computerworld) the Storage Networking World Conference series, by building and maintaining a vendor neutral Technology Center in Colorado Springs, and by promoting activities that expand the breadth and quality of the storage networking market.

In cooperation CMG, SNIA representatives will present a tutorial program discussing key concepts in storage networking technology. Sessions on ipStorage, new technologies for backup/recovery, and storage network management are planned.

Storage Performance Council SPC-1 benchmark results
The Storage Performance Council (SPC), another non-profit organization, defined the first industry standard performance and price/performance benchmark for enterprise storage systems called SPC-1. The SPC-1 benchmark specification was introduced to the world at CMG 2001. SPC-1 includes a standard methodology for stress testing disk subsystems, along with mandatory procedures for the audit and validation of results. At CMG 2002, the SPC will sponsor a public discussion of the benchmark results obtained so far by member organizations. Randy Kerns of the Evaluator Group will preside over the session, which will feature the presentation of the benchmark results comparing the cost and performance of rival storage architectures.

Panel Discussions
A panel will feature a discussion concerning the future of storage networking, featuring individuals actively involved in making that future happen. It will be moderated by Fred Moore and will feature industry experts, plus there will be an opportunity for audience members to interact with the panelists.
