Windows Performance and Scalability: A Decade of Challenges, Opportunities, and Advancements
Wael Bahaa-El-Din, Distinguished Engineer, Microsoft

This presentation discusses the performance analysis and product improvement efforts in the last decade that helped transform Windows Server from a single-processor low-end server in 1993 to one of the top high-end scalable servers and a performance leader in 2003. Specifically, we discuss the performance improvement strategies, tools and metrics that helped make Windows Server faster and more scalable for a wide range of workloads, benchmarks and hardware configurations. A number of case studies for the server product are presented and we explain how Windows server performance focus differs from that for the Windows desktop and clients. Finally, we share some lessons we have learned, and highlight future trends and challenges for the performance analysis community at large.

Dr. Wael Bahaa-El-Din heads the Windows Performance Analysis and Tools for the last 10 years and more recently the Windows Reliability groups in Microsoft. This includes a performance client group, a performance server group, Performance Management, and a Reliability group. These groups work on Windows-specific areas as well as Microsoft-wide performance and reliability issues. During his leadership of Windows Performance, Microsoft Windows Server has achieved world-class performance and scalability in many critical areas including on-line transaction processing, networking, internet, Active directory, and File server areas. Before joining Microsoft, Dr. Bahaa-El-Din worked at Digital Equipment Corporation for 7 years on Database Performance and Scalability (including OS, Database and Hardware performance) and was the Technical Director for Commercial performance when he left. Before moving to the industry, Wael worked in Academia for a few years as an assistant professor in University of Houston, Houston, Texas after earning his Ph.D. in computer science from The Ohio State University in the area of network performance analysis of voice and data.

Web Services - Past, Present and Future
Bradley D. Brown, Chairman and Chief Architect, TUSC

Web Services are the next logical step in application development. They provide a major step forward in the Internet computing model. There are so many components and continual research going on in this area. This presentation will focus on the things you really need to know and care about with Web Services. This presentation will focus on a practical example of a Web service application of the future.

Bradley D. Brown is chairman of the board, chief architect and co-founder of TUSC. Thomas Kurian, vice president -- Oracle server technologies, says, "Brad is clearly the world's leading authority on 9iAS and Oracle Web development."

Brad is recognized globally as an expert in Web technology. His current drive, motivation and passion are behind Oracle9iAS, Oracle Portal, XML, wireless and Java technologies. In 2002, he added the development and release of "Persicope" to his impressive list of accomplishments. Periscope is breakthrough software that successfully selects data from other data sources (i.e., Microsoft Access, Sybase, SQL Server, DB2, etc.). The data also can be inserted, updated and deleted from many source databases. The groundbreaking tool works with more than 100 databases that utilize a JDBC driver.

Brad's vast experience and expertise have earned him roles as chief information officer of Open Access Broadband Networks and board member for Lantech Inc., Colorado Uplift and Cactus Strategies. He's currently on-boarding chairperson for the Colorado chapter of the Young Presidents Organization after having previously served as its education chairperson, inventory of skills chairperson, technology officer, assistant education chairperson and membership chairperson. Brown also was a co-founder and acting chief technology officer for Eventconnex Inc.

In 2000, Brad was selected as a resident expert/mentor by Inc. magazine for its new technology channel. Brad's well-established in the publishing industry, as he's regularly featured in Oracle magazine.

In 2001, Brad combined his many years of experience into "Oracle9i Web Development" as part of "The Ultimate Oracle Library" series of books TUSC has written for various publishers. It's a follow-up to "Oracle8i Web Development," which was released in 1999, and the third book he has authored. Brad previously wrote "Oracle Application Server Web Toolkit Reference" in 1997.

Along with co-founders Richard J. Niemiec and Joseph C. Trezzo, Brad won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2001 in the category of "E-developer" and was inducted into the Chicago-Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame in 1998. TUSC also has won an Arthur Andersen-Chicago Best Practices Award for "Unleashing the Power of Technology" and was named a finalist in three other categories -- "Exceeding Customer Satisfaction," "Motivating and Retaining Employees" and "Strategic Leadership." TUSC has been selected as a finalist for Solutions Integrator magazine's SI Impact Award ("Solutions Integrator of the Year"), Inc./Cisco's Growing with Technology Award ("Fully Established Companies") and MassMutual's Blue Chip Enterprise Initiative Award.
