Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) for NEW Authors

  1. How long does a paper have to be?
Final camera-ready copies of papers should be no longer than 12 pages in a single spaced format. The preferred font size is 12-point using a sans serif font like Arial. Graphics should be within the text itself (as opposed to saving them for the end of the document), and should be viewable and clear when printed using the grayscale option.

  2. When are papers due?
Abstracts are usually due in the April timeframe, and full paper drafts are due in the June timeframe (actual dates will be officially announced in the Call for Papers. Final camera ready copy is due in September.

  3. Can I submit a paper late?
The real truth is - you can submit an abstract of a paper late (but please don't), but no force on this earth will allow you to submit the full paper draft late - not even one day. CMG uses the abstracts to start planning the conference, so the earlier they are received, the better.

  4. How do I submit a paper?
First create a new session description/abstract by using the Paper Submission System. You will receive an email confirmation and your paper number (don't lose this!). When the full paper draft is ready go back to the Paper Submission System and choose the ‘Upload Paper’ link associated with each abstract. We ask that papers be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format.

  5. Does my paper have to have lots of equations?
No. The best CMG papers usually discuss user experiences. And those experiences are interesting whether they led to positive or negative results. If equations were an integral part of the project behind the paper, by all means include them. But if they weren't, don't worry (you've likely saved some referee from a big headache!)

  6. Can I discuss products in my paper?
That's a sensitive subject. The basic rule is that blatant product marketing pitches will be flushed out and rejected. But mentioning that a tool was used as part of a larger study, and focusing on the study and not the tool should be acceptable. The program committee draws the line as to where blatant marketing ends and part of a larger study begins.

  7. I just did this study at work - how do I turn it into a paper?
Guidance and wisdom are available for your use - for free - via CMG's Mentor Program. Seasoned CMG veterans will step up and guide you through every part of the paper development process - all you have to do is ask.

  8. Do I still have to pay for the conference if my paper was presented?
Yes - but accepted authors do get a 50% discount on conference registration fees.
